A referral was sent to OT by the speech and language therapist as he was putting everything in his mouth and eating things.
What he put in his mouth/ate:
- Dirt and stones
- Paper
- Toilet roll and cardboard tube
- Play doh
- Sand
- Rubber wheels from toys
All very different textures
Autistic people very often have sensory needs. The National Autistic Society website has alot of information on this

I met with the girl from OT on my own for a chat. She recommended chewy tubes which the speech and language therapist had already advised getting. I had ordered 2 different shaped ones and he still uses them. We are on the second set as the first set were chewed so much the split!
She didn’t have much more to add, and I was a bit disappointed when I left the appointment. She said she didn’t need to see our son, just to give him a chewy tube.
Around 6 months later nursery advised that they were concerned about him putting so much in his mouth and asked if I could contact OT for advice, but again I was disappointed with the chat. Chewy tubes seemed to be the answer to it all!
